CHILDREN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL
Presents information on the curricula being used for younger children during the 2008-2009 school year at UPC.

Toddlers

The Children’s Christian Education program at University Presbyterian Church begins at the tender age of 1 year. The children ages 1-3 years meet with their parents and a teacher for part of the Sunday School hour each Sunday. They listen to songs and they learn to sing along as the teacher incorporates motion and rhythm with music so the children can learn the joy of making music together.

Kindergarten and Pre-K

The pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten class follows a curriculum entitled, "Godly Play." Jerome W. Berryman, who developed this series, describes it as "an imaginative approach to working with children... that supports, challenges, nourishes, and guides their spiritual quest." Time is spent learning Bible stories through activities, stories and play.

Elementary

The first through fifth graders meet as a group. Each month a new topic is introduced and studied in various ways throughout the month. This year, September will be devoted to Hospitality and Welcome, October is Peacemaking, November’s topic is Stewardship, and in December, students will learn about Advent. Each month is taught by a different church group (for example, Peacemaking Committee will teach in October) or individual. Part of each Sunday morning is spent with our children’s choir director as children learn to sing together in worship. This is the second year we will follow this model for our elementary students. Last year was very successful and we hope this year will be even better.
